Documentation for CONFIG.EXE for Ultimate Universe v1.62
Although every effort has been made to assure that this documentation is
correct, it is not always possible to catch every little detail. Thank
you in advance for your understanding on this and I hope that you will
enjoy this game as much as I do.
Garth Bigelow Michael Frankovich
The TopherSoft BBS Indianapolis Gamers Society BBS

FIDO 1:331/202 FIDO 1:231/635
==========================================================================
When you first run CONFIG.EXE you will have a menu with several options.
The first option you will have is:
Modify HardWare Information
This allows you to configure the basic game information. The options
are as follows.
Display in color: 0 = Black and White 1 = Color
This option sets the default starting mode for the game, when a player
enters the game.
Video Write Method: 0 = BIOS 1 = Direct
This option sets the method to which screen writes are done. If you are
running this as a door on a BBS then you should use the BIOS writes. If
you are running this as a local game then use the DIRECT screen writes.
Modem Simulation: 0 = Full Speed 1 = 9600 4 = 2400
7 = 1200 12 = 300
This option sets the simulated connect speed for local play. If you are
running this as a door then you may want to set this speed to 2400 or
9600 so as not to give yourself an unfair advantage over the other
players.
Set Import Function: 0 = Disable 1 = Enable
(Registered versions only)
This option sets the ability to import ships from other BBSs.
To enable this feature you will also have to alter IMPORT.BAT.
Set Export Function: 0 = Disable 1 = Enable
(Registered versions only)
This option sets the ability to export ships to other games.
To enable this feature you will also have to alter IMPORT.BAT.
NOTE: When a player uses this function, the current game assumes that
the player has died and all possessions are handled likewise.
Sound Pitch: 0 = Disable
This option allows you to set the sound that a ship will make when it is
moving. Only the local console will hear this sound. Use any number
between 1 and 255.
Set State of XON/XOFF: -1 = Bypass Settings
0 = Disable XON/XOFF Flow Control 1 = Enable XON/XOFF Flow Control
2 = Enable XON/XOFF on Receive Only 3 = Enable XON/XOFF on Transmit Only
This option allows you some control over the Hardware Flow Control of your
Modem.
NOTE: If RTS/CTS is set to -1 (Bypass) XON/XOFF will be bypassed too.
Set State of RTS/CTS: -1 = Bypass Settings
0 = Disable RTS/CTS Flow Control 1 = Enable RTS/CTS Flow Control
This option allows you some control over the Software Flow Control of your
Modem.
NOTE: If XON/XOFF is set to -1 (Bypass) XON/XOFF will be bypassed too.
Set Practice Mode: 0 = Disable 1 = Enable
In Practice Mode if a Ship is destroyed the Player can log on again
immediately and have his Ship Repaired and his remaining holdings intact.
The player must log on before the next event for the ship to be restored.
Note: Exportation and Lord of Creation Status are denied to any Ship that
has been resurrected in Practice Mode.
Set Debug Mode: 0 = Disable 1 = Enable
Ultimate Universe makes Assertions at various points in the code.
If these assertions fail an error message is displayed.
In Debug Mode the program (Ultimate or Daily) aborts after the report of
the failed assertion.
In either case the error is added to ERROR.LOG.
View Remote Players: 0 = Never 1 = If ok with the player 2 = Always
This option sets the local screen viewing method. If option 1 is chosen
then the player will be given an option when they enter the game to allow
or disallow remote viewing.
==========================================================================
The next option on the menu is:
Modify DOOR/BBS Information
Use the SPACEBAR to toggle the options.
.\ tells UU to look in the current directory.
Comm Support Type: None, Internal, Fossil
This option sets the communications support. NONE should only be used
for local games. FOSSIL will use whatever your fossil driver is (BNU
has been tested and is known to work). INTERNAL is not yet supported
but will be added in a future version.
Input File Type: Prompt, Command, Remote (DORINFOx.DEF),
Door (DOOR.SYS), Doorway (Doorway's DOOR.SYS),
Chain (WWIV CHAIN.TXT)
This option sets the type of drop file that UU will use. Prompt is only
for local games. For the others, determine the type of drop file that
your BBS uses and select accordingly.
Input File Name: Path to Drop File.
This option allows you to set where UU will look for the drop file. If
you do not set this to anything, UU will look in the directory from
which it was ran.
Import File Path: Path to Import File.
(Registered versions only)
This option allows you to set where UU will look for an import file. Do
not specify a file name and make sure that you have the trailing '\'.
(ie C:\BBS\DOORS\UU160\IMPORT\)
Export File Path: Path to Place Export Files.
(Registered versions only)
This option allows you to set where UU will place an export file. Do
not specify a filename and make sure that you have the trailing '\'.
Do not leave this option blank!
(ie C:\BBS\DOORS\UU160\EXPORT\)
Locked Baud Rate? Locked or Unlocked.
This option sets whether the Door Drop file will pass the Connect or Locked
Baud Rate to the game.
This setting has no effect on DORINFOx.DEF as only the locked baud rate is
supported by that file.
==========================================================================
After you have set up your hardware and BBS specific informations you
then will need to configure your universe. You will have the option of
modifying the primary dimension and creating up to nine others (Only in
the registered version). When you chose to modify a dimension you will
be given another menu of options:
Warship Starting Values
Universal Limitations
More Universal Limitations
Federation & Cabal Strength
Warship Limitations
Planetary Production Rates
Planetary Production Limits
Federation Fine Values
Outlawed & Starting Devices
Return to Main Menu
These options allow you to configure almost every aspect of your
universe from what a ship will start with to the maximum amounts a
planet can hold.
==========================================================================
WARSHIP STARTING VALUES
-----------------------
The initial number of Specialty Device Bays : 1 to 30
The initial number of Cargo Holds : 0 to 20,000
The initial number of Fuel Units : 1 to 10,000
The initial number of Attack Drones : 1 to 30,000,000
The initial number of Sector Mines : 0 to 30,000,000

The initial number of Genesis Devices : 0 to 200
The initial number of Planetary Probes : 0 to 200
The initial number of Credits : 0 to 20,000,000
These values are what a new player will start off with when he first
enters the game. Try to avoid giving the player too much to start with
as it will make the game too easy.
Note: The value of these items makes up the Federation Debt which the
player has 10 days to pay off, or they will suffer a 10% penalty
on the remaining balance per day.
A running total of the approximate value of the debt is displayed
in the help portion of this screen.
UNIVERSAL LIMITATIONS
---------------------
Enable Wildfire : 0 = Enable 1 = Disable
Explored sectors in Universe : 50 to 4000
Maximum sectors in Universe : Must be greater than the explored
sectors but equal to or less than
4000.
Maximum Minutes per Day : 1 to 240
Maximum sessions per Day : 1 to 127
Maximum Days of Inactivity : 2 to 127
Port Probability : 1 to 100
Warp Link Probability : 0 to 8
Return Link Probability : 0 to 100
Cabal Long Term Memory : 1 to 99
Spy Density : 0 to 4000
Status of Russian Roulette : # of days a ship has to survive to
play OR 0 = Disables -1 = Always on
-2 = Federation debt has to be paid
in full first
Status Of Quantum Credits : 0 = Outlaws 1 = Enabled
2 = Enables and raises jackpot daily
Number of Wandering Black Holes : 0 to 127
NOTES for Universal Limitations:
Enable Wildfire: If you enable this option, maintenance will run a
little slower due to the fact that more intense Federation and Cabal
battles will occur.
If you have few players playing you may wish to disable Wildfire so that
Universe developes more slowly.
Port Probability: This is a percentage chance that a port will be in a
given sector. Try not to set this number too high as it will make the
game too easy. Likewise, try not to set the number too low as it will
make the game too difficult.
Warp Link Probability: This is the average number of warp links per
sector. Setting this number to a value of 3 to 6 will give you and
average of 4 to 5 warp links per sector.
Return Link Probability: This is a percentage chance that a warp link
from one sector to another will come back (ie The chance that the warp
link from sector 500 to 501 will also go from 501 to 500).
Cabal Long Term Memory: This is the number of active targets the Cabal
can remember at one time. Setting this number too low will make for an
easy game but it may not be interesting enough. Setting this number too
hign may make the game to difficult.
Spy Density: This is the number of sectors the Spies will check when
maintenance runs.
Black Holes: Remember, when activating any black holes, you have to
remember that black holes destroy everything in a sector when they
occupy it. Setting this number to high may cause a great deal of
destruction and it could irritate some players.
MORE UNIVERSAL LIMITATIONS
--------------------------
Age of newspaper Archives : 1 to 99
Universal Entropy : 1 to 1000
Universal Anti Entropy : 1 to 1000
Number of Lottery Sessions : 0 to 28
Maximum Ergs of Warp Shielding : 1 to 32,000
Maximum Mars Bet : Greater than 0, but less than the
Mars betting Coffer
Mars Betting Coffer : Greater then the Maximum Mars bet

Universal Entropy: Number of sector links that can decay during maintenance.
Universal Anti Entropy: Number of sector links that can be created
during maintenance.
Maximum Ergs of Warp Shielding: This is the maximum for a sector.
Mine Damage: The total damage a mine will do is calculated as follows:
Total Mine Damage = Min Mine Damage + Variable Mine Damage
Be carful not to set this number too large as it will cause a great deal
of harm to a ship.
Space Madness Deferment: This is the number of days a new Captain will
be immune to Space Madness.
Maximum New Ports Opening Daily: This is the number of new ports that the
daily event will attempt to create.
Set Importation Sector: Set this to the sector that you want imported
ships to enter the universe at. Be careful, you could set it to a
sector that gets loaded with mines and fighters the player could be
killed without a chance to fight. I set mine to sector 1.
Max Worth of Port 6 Free Device: When a player first enters the game he
is allowed one free device from port 6. This sets the maximum valus of
that device.

The production rate of Flash Warp Devices : 1 to 32,000
NOTES for Planetary Production Rates:
These are the rates which determine how much a planet can produce. The
game comes predefined with set values but feel free to play around with
these numbers. Avoid extremes and the lower the number the higher the
production rate.

a Federation sector.
OUTLAWED & STARTING DEVICES
---------------------------
You may specify up to 10 devices that are not used in a dimension.
These divices will not appear at the ports, or they will not function if
carried over to a dimension where they are not allowed.
You may specify up to 5 devices that a ship will start with when they
first enter the game. This option is only availble in the primary
dimension, which is where all new players start.
==========================================================================
This is a basic overview of the configuration process for Ultimate
Universe along with some notes on what certain things are for. If you
have any problems then you can most likely check with other boards that
run UU or send a message to myself (Michael Frankovich at Fido
1:231/635) or to the author, Garth Bigelow. I am sure there are plenty
of people out there that will be glad to help.
==========================================================================
I would like to thank Garth Bigelow for writing this great game and
allowing me to help him with the documentation. I would also like to
thank my wife for putting up with the long distance charges incurred
calling TopherSoft BBS to get the latest game and utilities.
